How Many Grams in a Cup of Vegetable Oil?
One cup of vegetable oil weighs 218 grams — about 8 percent lighter than water, which is why it floats, and why millilitres of oil are not grams. Canola, sunflower and blended oils all convert at this same weight. Below are the tables, a converter for any amount, and how to measure oil without losing it to the jug.

How to measure vegetable oil properly
Weigh it straight into the bowl. Oil coats everything it touches: poured into a measuring cup and then into the bowl, a visible film — easily 5 to 10 grams — stays behind. On the scale, the bowl gets all 218 grams and the cup measure stays in the drawer.
Millilitres are not grams for oil. 100 ml of vegetable oil weighs 92 grams. A recipe written in millilitres that gets measured as grams over-pours by about 8 percent — in a cake that is a greasier crumb, in a dressing a drowned salad.
Measure oil before sticky things. If the same cup must measure oil and then honey or syrup, do the oil first: the thin film left on the cup is exactly what lets the honey slide out cleanly instead of leaving a third of itself behind.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a cup of vegetable oil?
218 grams — the same for canola, sunflower, grapeseed and blended vegetable oils, since all are nearly pure fat with almost identical density. A tablespoon of vegetable oil weighs 13.6 grams.
How many grams is 100 ml of vegetable oil?
92 grams. Oil's density is about 0.92 grams per millilitre, so multiply millilitres by 0.92 to get grams (218 ÷ 236.6 ≈ 0.92). The water rule of 1 ml = 1 g is the one conversion that does not survive contact with oil.
Can I replace butter with vegetable oil by weight?
In most cakes and muffins, yes — but not gram for gram. Butter is only about 80 percent fat, the rest being water and milk solids, so use roughly 80 grams of oil for every 100 grams of butter and add a tablespoon or two of extra liquid to replace butter's water.
