Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a cup?
There is no single answer, because a cup measures volume and grams measure weight. A cup of all-purpose flour weighs 120 g, a cup of granulated sugar weighs 198 g, a cup of butter weighs 227 g and a cup of honey weighs 340 g. The only correct conversion is an ingredient-specific one, which is why this converter asks you to choose the ingredient first.
How many grams is 1 cup of flour?
One US cup of all-purpose flour weighs 120 grams when the flour is spooned into the cup and levelled off — the standard method used by the King Arthur Baking weight chart, which is our primary reference. Bread flour is also 120 g per cup, whole wheat flour is 113 g, and cake flour is 113 g. Scooping flour directly from the bag can push a cup to 140 g or more, which is why weighing is more reliable.
How do I convert grams back to cups?
Choose your ingredient, enter the amount in grams, set the target unit to cups and the converter divides by that ingredient's grams-per-cup weight. For example, 250 g of all-purpose flour divided by 120 g per cup gives just over 2 cups. The result is shown as a decimal and as a kitchen-friendly fraction so you can measure it either way.
Is a US cup the same as a metric cup?
No. A US customary cup is 236.588 ml, while a metric cup used in Australia, New Zealand and much metric cookery is 250 ml — about 6 percent larger. All values on GramChef use the US cup, because the recipes that cause conversion problems are usually American. If your recipe uses metric cups, multiply gram results by 1.06 for a close approximation.
