How Many Grams in a Cup of Butter?

One cup of butter weighs 227 grams — exactly two US sticks, a neatness worth remembering. Butter is one of the few ingredients where the packaging does the measuring for you, but blocks, sticks and tubs differ between countries. How to measure butter properly

Use the wrapper's marks. A US stick is half a cup and weighs 113 grams, with tablespoon lines printed on the wrapper — cut cold butter by those marks and your weights are right without a scale. Two sticks make the full 227-gram cup; a standard European 250-gram block is a cup plus about a tablespoon and a half.

Melted and softened weigh the same — if you measure first. Weigh or measure the solid butter, then melt it. A cup filled with melted butter poured from a heap of unmeasured chunks almost always under-measures, because the chunks were never a true cup to begin with.

Salted and unsalted are interchangeable by weight. Both weigh 227 grams per cup; the difference is roughly ¼ teaspoon of salt per stick in the salted version. Swap freely by weight and adjust the recipe's added salt by that much if the dish is salt-sensitive.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a cup of butter?

227 grams — exactly two US sticks of butter, or four quarter-cup portions of 57 grams each. The figure is the same for salted and unsalted butter, and for butter measured soft, cold or melted, as long as you measure before melting.

How many grams are in a stick of butter?

113 grams. A US stick is half a cup, and a tablespoon cut from it weighs 14.2 grams. European butter usually comes in 250-gram blocks instead, so one block is a little more than a cup — 23 grams over.

How many grams are in half a cup of butter?

114 grams (half of 227, rounded) — one US stick. Half a cup is the most common butter amount in baking, which is why the stick exists: if your butter comes in sticks, you rarely need the scale for this one.
