One cup of heavy cream weighs 238 grams — a few grams less than a cup of milk, which surprises most people, because fat is lighter than water and cream is mostly fat. British double cream converts at the same weight. Below are heavy cream's full conversion tables, a converter for any amount, and how to measure it cleanly.

How to measure heavy cream properly
Shake the carton first. Cream's fat rises and thickens at the top of a carton that has sat in the fridge, so the first pour and the last pour are not the same cream. A good shake before measuring evens it out, and then it weighs 238 grams per cup like clockwork.
Weigh it before you whip it. Whipping folds in air and at least doubles the volume, so a cup of whipped cream is not a cup of cream. Recipes mean the liquid measure: weigh 238 grams of liquid cream per cup, then whip. The weight does not change in the bowl — only the volume does.
Cream types sit within a few grams of each other. Single (light) cream is 242 grams per cup, heavy (double) cream 238 — the richer the cream, the slightly lighter the cup, because fat weighs less than the water it replaces. For cooking, the difference is small enough to ignore; for the table above, use the exact figure.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a cup of heavy cream?
238 grams. US heavy cream and UK double cream convert at this same weight, despite double cream's higher fat content — across the cream family, a cup varies only between about 238 and 242 grams.
Why does heavy cream weigh less than milk?
Because fat is less dense than water. Milk is mostly water with a little fat and weighs 245 grams per cup; heavy cream replaces much of that water with fat, so the same cup weighs slightly less — 238 grams — even though it feels richer.
How many grams are in half a cup of heavy cream?
119 grams — exactly half of the 238-gram cup. A quarter cup is 60 grams (59.5, rounded) and a tablespoon of heavy cream weighs 14.9 grams, close enough to 15 grams for sauces and coffee.
