One cup of whole milk weighs 245 grams — a little more than a cup of water, thanks to the protein, lactose and minerals dissolved in it. When a recipe just says “milk”, whole milk is what it means. Below are milk's full conversion tables, a converter for any amount, and how measuring liquids by weight removes the meniscus guesswork.

How to measure whole milk properly
Weigh it in the jug. Put the jug on the scale, zero it, and pour to the gram figure. No crouching to read a meniscus at eye level, and no 10-gram error from a tilted bench — for custards and béchamel, that precision is the recipe.
Milk is not 1 gram per millilitre. That rule belongs to water. Milk runs about 3.5 percent heavier: 250 ml of whole milk weighs about 259 grams. Converting a millilitre recipe by treating milk as water under-measures every cup by roughly 8 grams.
Whole, skimmed and buttermilk sit together. Skimmed milk weighs within a few grams of whole milk per cup, and buttermilk converts at exactly the same 245 grams. In baking you can swap between them by weight without touching the rest of the recipe.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a cup of whole milk?
245 grams. Milk is water plus dissolved lactose, protein and minerals, with a little fat — the dissolved solids add more weight than the light fat removes, so a cup of milk outweighs a cup of water (236.6 grams) by about 8 grams.
How many grams is 250 ml of milk?
About 259 grams. Milk's density is roughly 1.035 grams per millilitre, so multiply millilitres by 1.035 — or divide the gram figure you need by 245 and multiply by 236.6 to go from grams back to millilitres.
How many grams are in half a cup of milk?
123 grams (half of 245, rounded). A quarter cup is 61 grams and a tablespoon of milk weighs 15.3 grams — numbers worth using, because milk is usually measured in exactly these small, error-prone amounts.
