How Many Grams in a Cup of Cream Cheese?

One cup of cream cheese weighs 232 grams — but cream cheese is almost never measured in cups. It comes in 227-gram (8 oz) blocks and tubs, and a block is a cup minus a tablespoon. Below are the full conversion tables, a converter for any amount, and how block, tub and whipped versions differ.

How to measure cream cheese properly

Work in blocks, not cups. An 8-ounce block is 227 grams — five grams shy of the full 232-gram cup, close enough that recipes written in cups work with a block and no adjustment. If a recipe calls for two cups, two blocks give you 454 of the 464 grams; the missing 10 grams will never be missed in a cheesecake.

Soften it before it goes near a mixer. Cold cream cheese beats into lumps that no amount of mixing fully removes from a batter. An hour on the counter brings a block to a spreadable softness; if you are in a hurry, cut it into cubes and spread them on a plate — the extra surface softens in fifteen minutes.

Whipped tubs are a different measure. Whipped cream cheese has air beaten through it, so a cup of it weighs far less than 232 grams and a tub's volume is mostly marketing. If a recipe gives grams, weigh plain block cream cheese; if it gives cups and you only have the whipped tub, measure generously and expect a lighter result.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a cup of cream cheese?

232 grams for regular block cream cheese. That is the King Arthur Baking figure used across GramChef. Whipped cream cheese weighs much less per cup because of the air beaten into it, and low-fat (Neufchâtel) versions are a few grams lighter again.

How many cups are in an 8 oz block of cream cheese?

Very slightly under one cup. A standard block weighs 227 grams (8 ounces), and at 232 grams per cup that is 0.98 cups — a difference of about one tablespoon. For any recipe, treat one block as one cup.

How many grams are in half a cup of cream cheese?

116 grams — half of the 232-gram cup. A tablespoon of cream cheese weighs 14.5 grams, which is the useful figure for the small amounts in frostings, dips and stuffed dishes.
