One cup of Greek yogurt weighs 285 grams — the heaviest cup of any dairy product in this database, because most of the watery whey has been strained away. Plain yogurt is only 245 grams a cup, so the two are not interchangeable by volume. Below: full tables, a converter, and how to measure it.

How to measure Greek yogurt properly
Expect whey on top — stir it back or pour it off, but decide. A spoonful of clear liquid pools on Greek yogurt in the tub. Stirred back in, the cup weighs its standard 285 grams and stays creamy; poured off, the yogurt is thicker and the cup heavier still. Either is fine — just be consistent between the scale and the recipe.
Weigh it out of the big tub. Greek yogurt is sold in 500-gram and 1-kilo tubs that bear no relation to cups. A 500-gram tub is 1¾ cups; recipes written in cups convert awkwardly, so put the bowl on the scale and spoon yogurt in to the gram figure from the table.
Fat percentage barely moves the weight. Full-fat, 2 percent and 0 percent Greek yogurts all sit within a few grams of 285 per cup — straining, not fat, sets the density. Choose by richness and protein; the conversion holds for all of them.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a cup of Greek yogurt?
285 grams. Greek yogurt is yogurt strained to remove much of its whey, so the solids left behind pack a cup far more densely than plain yogurt, which weighs 245 grams per cup.
How many grams are in half a cup of Greek yogurt?
143 grams (half of 285, rounded). A tablespoon weighs 17.8 grams — call it 18 — which is the amount that matters for marinades, raita and dollops on soup.
How many cups is 500 grams of Greek yogurt?
About 1.75 cups (500 ÷ 285 ≈ 1.75). That is exactly one standard large tub, which is no accident: tubs are sold by weight, and converting by weight is the only way the numbers line up.
