One cup of shredded mozzarella weighs 112 grams — one gram less than shredded cheddar, close enough that the two swap freely in most recipes. This is low-moisture mozzarella, the pizza kind; fresh mozzarella in brine is a different ingredient. Below are the full conversion tables, a converter, and how to measure it.

How to measure shredded mozzarella properly

Keep it cold until it is weighed. Mozzarella shreds warm quickly and clump into a single mass that neither measures nor sprinkles evenly. Weigh or measure it straight from the fridge, scatter it over the dish in the last minute before cooking, and let the oven do the rest.

Part-skim and whole-milk weigh the same. The 112-gram cup covers both the familiar low-moisture, part-skim shreds and whole-milk mozzarella — the fat difference is a few percent of the cheese, and the cup cannot tell them apart. Pick by melt and flavour.

Bags divide neatly. An 8-ounce bag is 227 grams — a fraction over 2 cups by this table — and a 16-ounce bag is just over 4 cups. For pizzas, weigh the cheese per base instead: about 125 grams gives a generous, even layer on a large pizza.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a cup of shredded mozzarella?

112 grams, for shredded low-moisture mozzarella — the standard pizza cheese, part-skim or whole-milk. Fresh mozzarella sold in balls in brine is not covered by this figure; drain it, tear it and weigh the pieces if a recipe gives grams.

How many grams are in half a cup of shredded mozzarella?

56 grams — half of the 112-gram cup. A tablespoon weighs 7 grams, the same as shredded cheddar, so the two cheeses are interchangeable spoon for spoon in most cooking.

How much mozzarella do I need for one pizza?

Most home recipes land between 100 and 170 grams for a large pizza — roughly 1 to 1½ cups of shreds. Weighing it is the difference between a pizza that is cheesy and one that is swamped: too much mozzarella weeps oil and steams the base.
