One cup of tahini weighs 240 grams — exactly the weight of a cup of mascarpone, and it behaves like a runnier peanut butter: it separates, it clings, and it rewards the scale. An unstirred jar is two ingredients in one. Below are the full conversion tables, a converter for any amount, and how to stir and measure it.

How to measure tahini properly

Stir the jar like you mean it. Tahini separates into a layer of oil over a solid sediment that a spoon barely dents. Work a table knife down to the bottom of the jar and stir until it pours as one — only then does any cup weigh 240 grams.

Weigh it into the bowl. Tahini coats measures worse than peanut butter because it is runnier. On the scale, add spoonfuls to the bowl until you reach the gram figure; the 15-gram tablespoon is the fallback for the small amounts in dressings.

Good tahini pours; bad tahini scoops. Quality tahini is a flowing paste, not a stiff sludge, and it should taste nutty, not bitter. If yours is stiff, it may just be cold or unstirred — stir and warm the jar briefly before blaming the brand.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a cup of tahini?

240 grams, for well-stirred tahini — sesame paste with its oil mixed back through it. Unstirred, the top of the jar is mostly oil and the bottom is dry solids, and neither measures honestly.

How many grams are in a tablespoon of tahini?

15 grams, exactly (240 ÷ 16). Tahini is usually used by the spoonful in hummus and dressings, so this is the figure that matters most; a teaspoon is 5 grams.

How many grams are in half a cup of tahini?

120 grams — half of the 240-gram cup. That is roughly the amount in a generous batch of hummus; weighed straight into the food processor, it is also the cleanest way to measure it.
