One cup of peanut butter weighs 270 grams, for smooth or crunchy peanut butter, well stirred. Natural peanut butter that has separated is the exception: unstirred, the top and bottom of the jar are effectively two different ingredients. How to measure peanut butter properly
Stir natural jars back together — properly. If oil is pooled on top, the first cups out of the jar are oily and light and the last are dry and dense. Stir the whole jar until uniform (storing it upside down in the fridge helps) and the 270-gram cup holds true from first spoonful to last.
Weigh it in the mixing bowl. Peanut butter clings: a carefully scraped cup measure can still hold back 15 to 20 grams. Put the bowl on the scale, spoon peanut butter in until it reads right, and every gram lands in the recipe. A lightly oiled spoon releases it cleanly.
Smooth and crunchy weigh the same. The peanut pieces in crunchy peanut butter displace spread of almost identical density, so both styles convert at 270 grams per cup and 17 grams per tablespoon. Choose by texture, not by the table.
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in a cup of peanut butter?
270 grams, for commercial smooth or crunchy peanut butter, stirred so the oils are evenly distributed. It is one of the heaviest cups in the kitchen — denser than butter (227 grams) because ground peanuts pack tight with very little air.
How many grams are in a tablespoon of peanut butter?
About 17 grams (16.9, rounded). Level the tablespoon — peanut butter mounds high and holds its shape, so a heaped spoon can quietly weigh 25 grams, half as much again as the level measure recipes intend.
How many grams are in half a cup of peanut butter?
135 grams — exactly half of the 270-gram cup. Half a cup is the standard amount in most cookie and sauce recipes; weighed straight into the bowl, it is also the cleanest way to measure it.
