Grams to Cups Converter
Grams convert to cups differently for every ingredient — 120 grams of all-purpose flour makes 1 cup, while it takes 227 grams of butter or 340 grams of honey to fill the same cup — because cups measure volume and grams measure weight, so this converter divides by each ingredient’s own published cup weight.
How do you convert grams to cups?
Divide the grams by the ingredient's weight per cup. That is the whole formula — but it means there is no single grams-to-cups number, because a cup of flour weighs 120 grams while a cup of butter weighs 227 grams and a cup of honey weighs 340 grams. A conversion that ignores the ingredient can be wrong by a factor of three.
Worked example: a metric recipe asks for 250 grams of all-purpose flour. Divide 250 by 120 (the grams in one cup of flour) and you get 2.08 cups — two cups plus about a tablespoon and a half. The converter above does this for all 128 ingredients on the site, using the published weights from King Arthur Baking and USDA FoodData Central listed on our methodology page.
Cups in a result are shown as a decimal and as a kitchen fraction, because measuring cups come in quarters and thirds, not tenths. A result of 0.44 cups of butter, for instance, is most useful read as about half a cup.
| Amount | All-purpose flour | Granulated sugar | Butter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 g | 0.417 cups | 0.253 cups | 0.22 cups |
| 100 g | 0.833 cups | 0.505 cups | 0.441 cups |
| 125 g | 1.04 cups | 0.631 cups | 0.551 cups |
| 250 g | 2.08 cups | 1.26 cups | 1.1 cups |
| 500 g | 4.17 cups | 2.53 cups | 2.2 cups |
When is it fine to measure in cups?
Cups are not the enemy. If a recipe was written and tested in cups, its author allowed for normal cup variation, and forgiving dishes — soups, stews, pancake toppings, a crumble — honestly do not care about a few grams either way. Cups are also fast, and most kitchens already own a set.
Weighing earns its keep where ratios carry the recipe: bread, cakes, pastry and anything with leavening, where ten percent too much flour changes the result. For those, convert to grams once with this tool or the cups to grams converter, write the grams on the recipe, and weigh from then on.
Frequently asked questions
How many cups is 250 grams of flour?
250 grams of all-purpose flour is 2.08 cups — divide 250 by 120, the grams in one cup of flour. In practice that is 2 cups plus about 1½ tablespoons; weighing the 250 grams is more exact.
How many cups is 100 grams of butter?
100 grams of butter is 0.44 cups — just under half a cup, since a full cup of butter weighs 227 grams. In tablespoons it is about 7 tablespoons.
Why is there no single grams-to-cups conversion?
Because a cup is a fixed volume and ingredients have different densities. Light powders like cocoa (84 grams per cup) and dense syrups like honey (340 grams per cup) differ fourfold, so any single number would be wrong for most ingredients.
Does the UK use cups?
Modern UK recipes rarely use cups; they are written in grams. Where a UK source does say cup it usually means the US cup, but a metric cup of 250 ml also circulates — see our page on the metric cup vs the US cup for the difference.
