One cup of mashed banana weighs 225 grams — about two large bananas' worth, mashed to a purée. The tricky part is 'mashed': chunky fork-mashed banana traps air and measures light, so ripeness and technique shift the cup. Below are the full conversion tables, a converter for any amount, and how to mash and measure it.

How to measure mashed banana properly

Weigh the mash, not the bananas. Bananas vary enormously — a 'medium' banana yields anywhere from 100 to 130 grams of flesh. Mash the bananas you have, put the bowl on the scale, and take out or add to reach the recipe's grams. It is the only honest method.

Mash it fully for the true cup. The 225-gram cup assumes a smooth, pourable mash. Banana left in fork-chunks holds air pockets and the cup under-delivers banana while looking full. For bread, mash to a purée with a few lumps at most.

Ripeness changes flavour, not weight. A blackened, fully ripe banana and a merely yellow one weigh the same peeled. What changes is sugar, moisture release and banana intensity — for baking, riper is better, and the conversion does not care either way.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a cup of mashed banana?

225 grams, for bananas mashed to a smooth purée. That is the figure banana bread recipes are built on: a cup and a half — 338 grams — is about three medium bananas.

How many bananas make a cup of mashed banana?

About two large bananas, or two and a half medium ones. One medium banana gives roughly 118 grams of flesh — about half a cup mashed — so for a cup you need two, plus the scale to close the gap.

How many grams are in half a cup of mashed banana?

113 grams (half of 225, rounded). A tablespoon of mashed banana weighs about 14 grams. Half a cup is the amount in most small-batch banana bakes, and one ripe medium banana lands within a few grams of it.
